What is Silver-Clad Copper (SCC)?

SCC is a bimetallic conductor with a copper core and silver outer layer, manufactured through cladding processes. It provides the superior surface properties of silver at a fraction of the cost of solid silver.

How can SCC match pure silver's RF performance at lower cost?

At high frequencies, current flows primarily on the conductor surface due to the skin effect. A thin silver cladding of 5-10 μm is sufficient to carry all the RF current, making SCC electrically equivalent to solid silver for RF applications while using 85% less silver.

What applications benefit most from SCC?

SCC is ideal for RF cables, coaxial cables, high-frequency connectors, antenna components, switching contacts, and any application requiring silver's surface properties (high conductivity, low contact resistance, oxidation resistance) without the cost of solid silver.

What is the minimum silver thickness required for RF applications?

For most RF applications up to several GHz, a silver thickness of 5-10 μm is sufficient. At 1 GHz, the skin depth in silver is approximately 2 μm, so a 5 μm cladding provides adequate margin for RF current flow.

Does SCC have the same contact properties as pure silver?

Yes, SCC provides equivalent contact properties to pure silver since the contact surface is pure silver. This includes low contact resistance, good solderability, and resistance to oxidation. The copper core does not affect the surface contact characteristics.
